Physical Robustness

NEXT’s sensors are coated with a specially designed scratch resistant layer. These films provide mechanical and chemical protection without sacrificing image quality. They are applied on top of the sensor surface at the end of the production process, at sheet or quarter sheet level, which helps maintain a low cost per sensor.

Similar coatings are used in several other applications today ranging from commercial, industrial and military markets, further validating the maturity and reliability of this coating technology.

NEXT’s sensors have been tested and benchmarked against all major sensors available in the market today.  Testing performed in NEXT engineering labs covers a wide range of elements, including :

  • Metal scratch resistance
  • Pen drop tolerance
  • Chemical attacks (acids and bases)
  • Corrosion (salt and humidity)
  • High/low temperature
  • ESD (air and contact discharge)

NEXT sensors are fault tolerant, so in the event that one or several pixels are damaged by harsh mechanical, chemical or ESD attacks, the sensor and algorithm will continue working. 

It also important to point out that even though the operating principle is based on heat, ambient or finger temperature does not affect sensing quality. This is because the sensor first activates the pixels (with a very low power heat pulse) and then reads a response; hence the distinction of the “Active Thermal” principle.
